Crossfit is an exercise program focused on healthy eating habits and living an active lifestyle. It focuses on functional body movements (movements that you perform in your day to day life without noticing) and a combination of strength and cardiovascular exercises. There is one workout of the day (WOD) and we all do it together as a group. The coach will supervise the class, modify the workout for each member as needed, teach new movements and correct your technique. The coach will take into consideration your level of fitness and prior injuries.
Classes are 1 hour long but during that hour we warm up (usually for about 10 to 15 minutes), we have a skills session where we practice weightlifting, powerlifting or any other very technical skills (usually for about 20 to 25 minutes) and finally we do the workout (usually about 7 to 25 minutes). Workouts can be longer and of lower intensity on days were no skills are practiced.
HIIT stands for High Intensity Interval Training. It is a 30 to 45 minutes long workout that focuses on increasing your heart rate for short intervals of time. The benefits of this type of programming include: increased metabolic rate, improved cardiovascular performance and it can help you lose fat while gaining some muscle. Movements are varied and include: squats, push ups, dumbbell workouts, box step overs or box jumps, sit ups, wall balls, jump ropes, running, rowing, and many others. It will challenge you but it will make you better!
Low Impact Training. This class is designed as a low impact - low intensity day for our crossfit and HIIT members. Class is 1 hour long but workouts are usually about 45 minutes. A variety of accessory movements are performed that will help improve your performance in crossfit and HIIT classes. You can join the class even if you don't do crossfit or HIIT and still get a good workout.
When people say that crossfit is like a religion what they mean is that crossfit provides a sense of belonging to something bigger than yourself.
Crossfit is an exercise program designed around the concept of community. We are living in complicated and stressful times. Thus, having a support system is crucial for a healthy lifestyle. That's what the crossfit community provides. A group of people with similar interests that support each other both in the gym and in life.
Belonging to a community is specially important in a city like New York where people come from all around the world sometimes leaving friends and family behind. Our community is unique because we all have a similar mindset. We are all professionals (lawyers, teachers, bankers, government officials, doctors, etc) that at the beginning or at the end of the day get together to blow off some steam from work. It is even more special  because we have become friends. Yes friends! In a city like New York City, can you believe that? Contrary to friends from work, you choose to be around this people. So yes... it is special and we hope you'll become part our family.
We welcome members from ages 15 and up. Members younger than 18 will need to come in with their legal guardian to sign a waiver. We have members over age 70 and they love it!
Definitely, crossfit is an exercise that was designed so that everyone can participate. Most members need slight modifications to the Workout Of the Day (WOD) so, believe us, you won't be the only one.
Absolutely not. Our coaches are trained to modify the workouts so that everyone can participate and enjoy it. We have members that have never jumped rope, done squats, push-ups, burpees, etc... We are here to teach you.
